Belize City Man Remanded After Failing to Meet Bail in Domestic Assault Case

A forty-four-year-old Belize City man has been remanded to prison after being unable to meet bail conditions following his arraignment for common assault stemming from a domestic dispute.  Linsdale Requena, a maintenance worker of Fabers Road, appeared unrepresented before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court. Requena was charged with common assault in connection with an incident involving Nyra Allen which police say occurred on March 5.  During the court proceedings, Requena pleaded not guilty to the charge.  According to police, the incident reportedly arose from a domestic dispute during which Requena allegedly assaulted Allen and caused damage to her cellular phone during the altercation.  The prosecution raised strong objections to bail, expressing concern that if released, Requena could potentially interfere with the complainant. Despite this, the Senior Magistrate granted bail in the sum of fifteen hundred dollars plus one surety of the same amount, with strict conditions attached.  Under those conditions, Requena was ordered not to contact or interfere with the virtual complainant, not to come within one hundred and fifty feet of her, and not to be arrested or charged with any other offense while on bail.  However, Requena was unable to meet the bail conditions by the end of the day and was therefore remanded to the Belize Central Prison until May 7, or until bail is met.
