The Bankers Association of Belize is warning customers to be careful as scammers continue targeting bank account holders through phone calls and messages. The Association says some fraudsters are pretending to be representatives from local banks and are trying to trick customers into sharing private information, including passwords, account details and verification codes. In some cases, the scammers use fake phone numbers, logos or email addresses to make their messages appear legitimate. The public is being reminded that banks will never call, text or email asking customers for their PIN, password, card information or one-time security codes. Customers are also advised not to click on unfamiliar links sent through text messages, emails or messaging apps. Instead, they should access their online banking by using their bank’s official website or mobile application. Anyone who receives a suspicious message or call is encouraged to contact their bank directly using the official customer service number. The Bankers Association says customers who believe their banking information may have been compromised should report it immediately to their financial institution.
