Agriculture Accounts for 15% of Belize’s Economy as Sector Eyes Growth

The Ministry of Agriculture held its Annual General Meeting in Dangriga this morning.  The meeting took place at the Russell “Chiste” Garcia Auditorium and focused on the sector’s contribution to the economy, its achievements over the past year and the challenges affecting farmers and producers.  Minister of Agriculture Rodwell Ferguson says agriculture currently accounts for approximately fifteen percent of Belize’s gross domestic product. He hopes to see that contribution increase significantly through greater production, investment and market development.  Ferguson, however, acknowledged the financial challenges confronting the government as farmers continue to seek assistance with production costs, climate-related losses and other pressures. He discussed the difficulties involved in providing subsidies to an industry with competing needs and limited public resources.

Chief Executive Officer Servulo Baeza also provided an overview of the sector’s performance across the country, highlighting developments within the various agricultural industries and production areas.

The AGM also gave technical officers and other stakeholders an opportunity to review ongoing programmes and identify areas requiring greater attention. These include improving productivity, supporting farmers, strengthening food security, expanding markets and building resilience against climate and economic pressures.
